Edith “Mary” Rosser Johnson, 94, of Boonville passed away peacefully Friday afternoon June 2 at Cooper County Memorial Hospital.

 

Private family graveside services will be Wednesday, June 7 at 10 A.M.in Walnut Grove Cemetery. A memorial service for Mary will be at 11 A.M. Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church officiated by Rev. Norlita Kaul followed with visitation and fellowship over a luncheon.  Arrangements under the direction of Howard Funeral Home.

 

Edith “Mary” Rosser Smith Johnson was born on May 12, 1923 in Coventry, England the daughter of Thomas Cyril and Edith Gertrude “Gregson” Rosser. Mary attended the Stoke Park Secondary School for girls in Coventry. When WWII broke out she joined the A.T.S., the British Army Women’s Auxiliary. She was a clerical worker at the Headquarters of South Eastern Command at Luton Hoo, in Bedford shire, U.K. Before joining the Army, she worked briefly at the Ministry of Labor in Coventry.

 

On October 24, 1944, she married Eugene W. Smith of Boonville who was serving in the U.S 8th Airforce. He passed away on July 9, 1981. She became a naturalized American Citizen in 1954. She married William A. Johnson on May 28, 1983 in Boonville and he preceded her in death on Mar. 19, 1997.

 

Mary worked for a short time in the Boonville with the Cooper County Health Department. She was an Elder in the First Presbyterian Church where she has been a member for 71 years.

 

She is survived by her son David Smith and wife Marty of Boonville, MO. and a step-son, Louis C. Johnson and wife Fay of New Roads, LA. She is also survived by one step-granddaughter, Jennifer Vosburg and two step-great grandchildren, Justin and Anna Reva all of New Roads, LA. She was preceded in death by her parents in 1981.

 

In Lieu of flowers the family request memorial to be given to the First Presbyterian Church of Boonville.
