Billy Chipley Obituary

Billy “John” Chipley, 96 years old, of Boonville, MO died Sunday, June 2, 2024.

John was born October 31, 1927 near Gravois Mills, MO to Vencil and Lois (Pace) Chipley.  After graduating from Gravois High School, he was in the last group inducted into the service for WWII from Morgan County; he served in the US Army Signal Corp. After meeting her at the roller rink, he married Alta Hutchison on August 3, 1951, at the Versailles Christian Church. He began his work career at the Morgan County Gas Company in Versailles, Mo.  Switching to social work, he and Alta moved to Boonville, Mo in 1964 where he worked as the Director of Cooper County Family Services until his retirement. He was a long time member of Nelson Memorial United Methodist Church.

John loved the outdoors…hunting, going for drives around the countryside, and spending time at “the farm” teaching his grandchildren to fish, camp, and appreciate nature. In his retirement years, John could be found most mornings at McDonalds, solving the world’s problems with his coffee buddies. He was an avid reader and loved visiting with people…no one was a stranger for long.

John is survived by two daughters, Jill (Jim) Quigley of Lenexa, KS and Mary (Rob) Stoecklein of Weldon Spring, MO.  He is also survived by 5 grandchildren: Matt (Kim) Quigley of Chicago, IL; Andrew (Moana) Quigley of Los Angeles, CA; Joe (Jen) Stoecklein of Ballwin, MO; Emily (Ty) Huckaby of Golden, CO; Anna Stoecklein of London, England and 5 great grandchildren: Caleb and Zoe Quigley, Jack and Camryn Stoecklein, Casper Quigley, and Oliver Huckaby.  John is also survived by one sister: Shirley Beth Hibdon (Grain Valley).

He was preceded in death by his wife and parents and many sisters-in-laws and brothers-in-laws.

The funeral service will be Friday, June 7 at 11am at Nelson Memorial United Methodist (407 East Spring Street) in Boonville with visitation preceding at 10am. Interment will be at the Versailles Cemetery in Versailles, MO.
