Johnie Bob Hendrix, Oct. 30, 1943- June 24, 2023
U.S. Army veteran and retired manager Johnie Bob Hendrix of Denton, Texas died at his home June 24 after a long illness. He was 79.
He was born October 30, 1943, in Howard County, MO., the sixth child of James William (Bill) Hendrix and Ruby Kathryn Robb.
He is survived by his wife, Becci Williams Hendrix of Denton; son, Benson James Hendrix and his wife Mary Bartsch, and son Nathan Douglas Hendrix, all of Albuquerque, NM.; and stepdaughters, Amber Nicole Walters and Kirstyn Renee Walters, both of Denton.
He is also survived by sisters Edith Joan Andrews of Boonville, MO., and Billie Sue Luttrell of Quincy, IL.; and many nieces and nephews to include Vicky, Terry, and Ruby Miller; Wade and Justin Andrews; David, Mark and Paul Sprigg; James Susan, Andrew, Robert, Thomas and Beth Luttrell; Shelby Dee Hendrix and Kimberly Jane (Hendrix) Green; and great-nieces, Dakota Andrews, Shanna Webster and Amber Andrews.
He was preceded in death by brother Shelby Douglas Hendrix; sisters Kathryn Rose Miller and Wilma Jane Montgomery; and nephew Patrick Andrews.
He was a 1961 graduate of Laura Speed Elliott High School in Boonville, MO. He attended Central Missouri State University, the University of Maryland, Western New Mexico University and Palm Beach State College.
At Laura Speed Elliott High School, he was a founding member of the original Science Club and participated in school plays. He was voted back of the Year 1960-61 season and captain of the Boonville Pirates football team. He played first base and was the lead-off batter for the Boonville Little League Champions 1956 Swanson Cookies baseball team.
He was an avid reader, consuming several hundred books a year.
In 1963, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. After basic training at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO., he was accepted into Paratooper Training School and was assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division Headquarters Company, then to the 1st Airborne Brigade of the 8th Infantry Division. Because of his organizational and writing skills he was tapped for administrative tasks.
While in the U.S. Army he attended Advanced Individual Training, U.S. Army Infantry School, NCO Academy and studied the Uniform Code for Military Justice. He graduated as one of two honor Students from Army Airborne School. He jumped out of the first airplane he ever flew in and was stationed in Germany and Jumped there and in Turkey.
He finished a three-year tour and mustered out, receiving honorable discharge with the rank of Sgt. E-5. He considered it and honor and privilege to serve his country.
After the military he spent 30 years in the publishing industry and 20 years in management.
Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. July 28 at the Boonesboro Cemetery Boonesboro, MO, followed by a Celebration of Life at the Boonesboro Church.
