Laurence, “Larry” Smith of Boonville, Missouri and Lady Lake, Florida passed away at the age of 95 on Tuesday, December 26 at Boone Hospital in Columbia, Missouri. His quick-wit, humor, and always-positive nature carried through until his final days. Larry was a resilient father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who never met a stranger, and was greatly admired by all who knew him.
Larry was born on April 1, 1928, to Robert and Caroline Smith in Beloit, Wisconsin and grew up in Belvidere, Illinois. He graduated from Belvidere High School in 1946. He then attended college at Michigan State University and received a degree in Agriculture. Larry was drafted into the army, and stationed at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri. On a night out in Jefferson City, he met Dorothy Bode. The two fell in love and were married in 1952.
Larry and Dorothy moved back to Belvidere, IL where he owned and operated a pool hall with his brother, Bob. It was here, their first two children, Susan and Tim were born. In 1956, the family moved to St. Louis, where Larry attended and graduated from St. Louis College of Pharmacy. During this time, Carol and Lisa were born.
Larry accepted a job at Miller's Drugstore in Boonville, MO in 1961. Soon after moving, their fifth child, Terry, was born and the family of seven decided to make Boonville their permanent home. Larry would ultimately purchase and run Medical Arts Pharmacy, which he owned until 2020.
In 1980, Larry sadly lost his beloved wife, Dorothy. He often credited Dorothy's support for all of their life’s achievements. After her passing, Larry dedicated himself to work until his retirement in 1992. Upon retiring, he enjoyed traveling in Europe before settling in Lady Lake, Florida.
Living in Florida brought Larry much joy, as he cherished the company of friends, relished sunny visits to Panera and never missed a Football Sunday or chance to cheer on his favorite teams.
Following a high school reunion in Belvidere, IL, Larry reconnected with his former classmate, Juanita Hicks. They married in 1997 and enjoyed traveling together and spending time with their many friends in Florida until Juanita’s passing in 2017.
Larry was a long-time parishioner of SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Boonville. He will be deeply missed and remembered by all who knew and loved him.
He is preceded in death by his parents Robert and Caroline Smith, brother Bob (Marilyn) Smith, wife Dorothy Bode Smith, wife Juanita Hicks Smith, daughter Susan Smith and daughter in law Angie Chipley Smith.
He is survived by children Tim (Annamarie) Smith, Carol Agnew (Ralph Browning), Lisa (Allen) Jennings, and Terry Smith. Step-daughters Nancy (Dan) Grieshop and Patti Hicks. Grandchildren Sam (Brooke) Smith, Alex (Robyn) Smith, Megan O’Gorman, Jessica Jennings, Jennifer Jennings, Alyssa Jennings and seven great grandchildren as well as his loyal cat, Pongo.
Per Larry’s wishes, there will be a private family burial.
