Robert Gassaway Obituary

Robert Harland Gassaway, 80, of Boonville, MO, formerly of Tipton, passed away Monday, February 26, 2024, at his home, with his wife, Michele, by his side.

At Bob’s request, no services will be held and private inurnment will be at the Missouri Veterans’ Cemetery in Higginsville.

Bob was born on October 4, 1943, in Eureka, CA, and was the son of the late Harland C. Gassaway and Audella Lewis Gassaway Chapelle. He lived for many years in the northern California area and was a graduate of Eureka High School.  Bob entered the United States Navy, serving six years, and was honorably discharged on October 8, 1964.  While serving our country he was stationed overseas for nearly four years on the USS Daniel Webster and USS Simon Lake.  Most of Bob’s career was spent in the insurance industry in sales.

Bob’s story of meeting and marrying Michele is one for the books and one that, no doubt, was ordered of the Lord.  Becoming single Bob placed a notice in a singles bulletin that was exclusive to the Washington, Oregon and northern California areas hoping to find someone to spend the rest of his life with.  Unbeknownst to him, someway, somehow, one of those bulletins found its way to the north central part of Alabama where a Michele Borron, now also single, was helping out in churches by playing piano and singing, not only as a soloist, but with her daughters.  Knowing that she wanted to further her education, Michele moved back to her home state of Iowa and while unpacking, there was that singles bulletin she had come across while in Alabama.  Her interest was piqued with the ad from Bob, and after a few partial attempts of dialing some of the numbers and stopping, Michele finally made the call and as they say the rest is history.  The pair began visiting over the phone for some time, with the average call lasting two to three hours.  On May 20, 1993, Bob flew into Des Moines, Iowa, where Michele met him at the airport, and after being one of the last off the plane, Michele thinking he had backed out, Bob appeared and gave her a hug, then got down on one knee and asked her to marry him.  The next day, May 21, 1993, Bob and Michele were married and enjoyed over 30 years of marriage.

In addition to Michele, he is survived by her four daughters: Elizabeth Sorensen, Rebecca Cornell, Linda Cue and Luann Avalos (Chris); eight grandchildren: Michael Sorensen, Autumn Marksberry, Jeremy Cue, Michele Cue, Micaela Shannon, Sarah Avalos, Hannah Avalos and Nathaniel Avalos; two half-sisters, Darlene Dungan and Dottie Lee; one half-brother, Tom Chapelle as well as nieces, nephews, and other extended family.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Roseanne Adams.
